Why is my fatbike illegal?
Many fat bikes in the Netherlands, such as the OUXI V8, do not comply with European and Dutch regulations. This means that one or more of the following points are not in order:
Motor power above 250W: A higher motor power is illegal. We often see that a Fatbike, despite being capable of 25 km/h, still has an excessively high motor power.
Throttle without pedal assistance: This officially makes the fat bike a motor vehicle, for which you need a driver's license and insurance.
Speed above 25 km/h electrically assisted: This exceeds the permitted limit for electric bicycles, you are uninsured!
No EU quality mark (CE marking): Without this marking, the vehicle does not meet road safety requirements.
Illegal imports: No quality control, tax evasion, and often cheap, low-quality parts.
What are the risks?
High fines and confiscation: Fines can be up to €1,385 and the police can confiscate your fat bike.
Uninsured driving: In the event of an accident, you cannot rely on your insurance. This means you must pay for all damage to yourself, the bike, and any third parties yourself!
Technically unsafe: Illegal fat bikes are often of poor quality, which can cause defects or accidents. There are absolutely no import controls due to illegal imports.
Often no guarantee: If something goes wrong, you are often on your own.
